Transferring my files from iPhone to Android

Hello there, everyone.

After getting my iPhone 5 stole while travelling, I decided going for a try with Android since there's going to be no more jailbreak since iOS 7 release. And this is only if there is going to be one...

Therefore, because my cellphone company gives me a free phone, I'll try the S4. Anyone has something better to suggest? I've hear about the Nexus, maybe the new Moto X?

Anyway, that's not the real reason why I'm posting this thread. I just want to know what to do in order to transfer all my thing from iTunes to... to...to what? I don't even know what is the iTunes equivalent for Google. At first, I thought that iTunes was a PAIN in the *ss. With time, this has changed and I find this tool pretty useful indeed. Maybe there's something similar for the Android platform? In other words, I'm just preparing myself to get adapted to this new platform and any of your help is appreciated.

My concerns are
-Playlists
-Contacts (I've managed to find a way with a little search)
-SMS (I've managed to find a way with a little search)
-Backups
-iCloud sync? Something similar
-iTunes equivalent... (I'm sure there isn't. but trying anyway)

//START of out of topic (It's funny how my opinion has changed towards this frigging lagging iTunes application that complicated your life more than helping it <<< ancient opinion about iTunes. Figured out that understanding it helped me more than anything else and I also figured out this was one reason I didn't want to change to Android) //END of out of topic

PS: Do I really need an gmail account in order for me to use Android or I can use my MS Outlook account?

Hi Robert, here is a few links I found after a quick google search: Transfer your contacts: http://koo.do/14CbYjX Transfer your SMS http://koo.do/13c97Ti Transfer music and playslist: http://koo.do/12qPfbH You will need a Gmail account on your Galaxy S4. Enjoy this great phone! ________________________ If you see a good answer, give it a star.

He will need a Google account to use the Play store etc. but any email address is accepted... it doesn't have to be Gmail. Just thought I'd clarify that 🙂 Edit: ohh after a bit of research, I'm not so sure if that is still the case... it seems Google is really pushing their "plus" services. You're probably right, Yannick! Still, Robert, you can certainly tie in any email address you like. Great choice on the GS4, I personally love it!

When I got the HTC One, the HTC Sync Manager software let me import contacts, texts, and pics from an iTunes backup (local backup only, not iCloud). HTC also has an option to back up to their cloud, similar to iCloud. I've never restored yet. As much as I dislike certain Apple business practices, no one seems to have fully caught up to Apple when it comes to the ease and reliability of backing up and restoring your phone.

If only photos and text are backed up through iCloud it would be as close to perfect as it could be 😉

True that... Pros and cons of each company...

For purchasing music on android, I use 7digital. If you're looking for software to sync data to the phone each manufacturer has their own. For LG it's LG PC suite, for Samsung it's Kies (which is terrible), etc.

There may or may not be a jailbreak for iOS7. It is too soon to tell. For me personally I am waiting to see the Moto-Google X-phone before any big high end decisions. You can transfer your itunes music and playlists to android with the app DoubleTwist. However your iPhone App purchases are not transferable to the Google Play store. This guide will help: http://google.about.com/od/socialtoolsfromgoogle/qt/Goodbye-Iphone-Hello-Android-How-To-Switch-To-Android-Phones.htm Your gmail contacts will be your new iCloud via your gmail account.

I'm following the JB community pretty well and I think iOs 's jailbreak will be soon available after the release. This is what the developers are saying.

Running iOS 7 Beta 2 now and I honestly don't need to jailbreak anymore. Better task management and quick toggles was all I used to jailbreak for.

This is the only thing I regret about getting my iPhone stolen before the iOs 7 release. I won't get to test it, so my opinion toward the Android/iOs thing will be biased, but anyways, I'll maybe get myself an iPad...

Hehe, I'd think that the worst part about having your iPhone stolen would be the loss of a $700 device 🙂

+ the loss of the ability to JB if I buy a new iPhone. But, I'll manage to get my 700$ back. Someway or another, we must take the money we give to the insurance companies back!

@Robert, an untethered jailbreak may takes a few months but there is a risk that it never happens too. @Philosoraptor, I think while iOS7 is a huge step forward, some people would still want to jailbreak for other functionality that iOS7 doesnt yet have. Like a SNES emulator 😛

Timo, is Kies that horrible? Why is it? Also, Paul's opinion would be greatly appreciated here. AKA Kid.Android.

When it works it's decent enough, but it has an unpleasant habit of refusing to recognize the phone when you plug it in. I actually found it performed better on mac than on pc. With that said, any android device will allow you to connect it as a virtual drive, allowing you to easily drag and drop files (music, video) to and from the phone.

Like it always used to be with any MP3 before... I don't know if I should consider it as good for Android or bad.

Personally I use: SMS Backup+ to backup my SMS & Call Logs automatically--> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync SOS Online Backup to backup my pics, vids & App Data automatically--> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sosonlinebackup.android Other than that, Google already automatically backs up your Contacts, Calendar, Chrome, Drive, GMail, Google+, Keep, Currents & Play Store content. I go through about a half dozen phones per year (partly thanks to the Mobile Masters program) so I make sure it's as easy as possible for me to pick up a new device & have it looking exactly the same way my others do.

My personal best what, device? I'm a bit skewed towards Android to be honest... Over the past 4 years I've personally owned (excluding the Mobile Masters temporary loaners): 12 Android devices 4 iOS devices 2 Blackberry devices 2 Windows Phone devices I find positives & negatives in each of the platforms but for me & my needs, the most positives (and least negatives) are found with Android. That's not to say I haven't recommended other platforms to other people, I have, I just prefer Android for myself. and...I ultimately prefer the Nexus 4 so far eventhough the S4 is superior spec-wise. I'd like to get the Google Edition of the S4, but not at that price. In my opinion taking out Samsung's features the 650$ price tag isn't justified. I'm eagerly awaiting the Nexus 5, iPhone 5S & hopefully a new WP8 flagship all this Fall.

Yeah, it was about devices. What kind of user would you describe yourself as? Why Android over iOs or WP?
