Should I buy the Alcatel ONETOUCH Idol X+?

Currently I have the Ace IIx, which I've owned for just over a year and a bit. I noticed that the ONETOUCH has a $100.gift card. If I were to open a new line (account) I could get the.gift card, pay off my old account and get a better phone. Is this worth doing (or even possible)? (I do a lot with my phone, web, games and am a tad annoyed with the sutteriness of the ace IIx)

Hi Brad, If you feel you're not attached to your old number you certainly can open a new line and cancel the other. When you open new line you will get the perk of having a $100.gift card as well. Keep in mind if you do have any additional tab balance on the old line you can pay that off in store or add it to the next bill, but if you wanted to cancel the line all together I'd suggest speaking with customer service as they would have the ability to shut down the old line. Their hours of operation are as follows: Hours of Operation Monday − Friday: 10am - 9pm Saturday: 9am - 7pm Sunday: 9am - 7pm Hope this helps answer your question 🙂

Another thing to add if you are looking at the Alcatel device, it would definitely be a big upgrade compared to the Ace 2X. So you can't lose either way.

Out of curiosity, what in particular attracted you to the Alcatel OneTouch Idol X+?

bigger screen, fairly powerful, closest thing to the M8 that I could find 😛 (not a fan of galaxy phones so the S5 isn't something I'm considering at the moment)

Also the fact that I could get it now, without paying anything out of pocket
some clarification, I was originally going to wait until next year when I could afford the HTC One (M8) but Koodo went and cut that option before I had a chance! So, I want a powerful device but not sure if it's worth it to jump on this phone, or wait for something a bit better

Another device to keep in mind is the Nexus 5, that is $0 on a tab medium, mind you you don't get a free.gift card with the phone, but the benefits to having an unlocked Google phone is that you're guaranteed to get updates for at least two years and if you decided to leave Koodo at some point you can use it on any GSM carrier as it is factory unlocked. So no pesky $35 unlock fee.

is it that much better than the onetouch? The screen doesn't seem as nice and it's not as powerful... (or is the 8 cores in the onetouch not as good)

The processor in the Nexus 5 has a slightly better clockspeed than the One touch, but they have been comparing it (N5) against the high end smartphones that are double the price, and since it is running a stock build of Android it doesn't have something to bog it down when multitasking or doing day to day things. Plus with Alcatel, you may not receive updates as often and even though the Nexus 5 may have a slightly 'washed out' appearance to the screen it is more true to life with color reproduction and it is easier to see in broad day light than other phones.

also, with the nexus 5 what are the chances Koodo will hold onto it for a bit, and I'll be able to get it for less later (or my current tab will drop so i won't have to pay as much for my old phone)

That will be the issue in the long run, after the new nexus phone is released, Koodo may hold on to some devices as they may have left over stock, they did this with the Nexus 4, right after the Nexus 5 was released. Same thing goes when you try to get it straight from Google, they clear out their stock and as soon as that happens you have to look elsewhere. Which can be a pain in the neck.

It's up to you, Brad 🙂 I have a European Alcatel which is garbage, but hopefully Alcatel has stepped up and been able to create something useful for once. Mine is the OT 918 btw. Please be our community guinea pig and tell us what the phone is like - we're all very anxious to know 😃

I'm afraid to, when I started with Koodo I was all excited to get the samsung nexus phone, but they'd just removed it and the best option at the time was the Optimus Black, the phone was garbage!. So I don't like the idea of being a guinea pig 😛

Haha I know! I wouldn't be keen either... I haven't seen any reviews yet though so it's hard to tell what those phones are like.

Bell carried the earlier version of this device and it was laggy as hell just trying to go through the menu despite having a Quad core processor because it was from mediatek. The camera was 13MP but it was overexposed and had blurry images. Specs don't mean everything.
ok, so should I put up with my device for a while and wait for Koodo to get the Nexus X? (nexus 6) It will be more at launch but might be a bit better phone.

If you feel you can wait that long, plus if you place your order quickly enough to get ahold of one because just like the Nexus 5 and the one preceeding it, they were hard to come by especially through Google at first anyways.

I would not have the money for it at launch

The MT6592 SoC with octa-core ARMv7 that's in the Idol X+ has been benched many times and isn't as powerful as the current crop of Snapdragon 800/801 SoC's and Krait processors. It's slotted somewhere in between the previous S4 Pro (like in the Nexus4) and the Snapdragon 600 (Galaxy S4, HTC One M7). Not the most powerful thing out there, but not too bad either. With 2GB of RAM and an SD slot, I'd certainly try it! My main concern would be with updates. We have no history of Alcatel's commitment about keeping their devices up to date, but so far they've taken the Idol X+ from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2, so it's a good start. Between the choices you mentioned, Brad, I'd still go Nexus5 before Idol X+, but the SD slot is a must for some, so I'd certainly not turn it down if it was given to me..................... 🙂 Hope it helps!

I have the acatel idol x. I have had no issues with it so far. Camera is nice, screen resolution is awesome. Comes with swift key installed one of the best keyboards you can use with android. Its fast, its light, slick and just feels right in the hand. And the fact it comes with the SD card slot is just fantastic, that's where the nexus fails. 16gb built in memory is not enough 🙂 I hope this helps with the decision. Also the reason I chose the phone was because it does come with a 2 years manufactures warranty.

Hippie, do you own the Idol X (sold at Bell/Virgin last year), or the Idol X+? They're VERY different phones, and we need to match this great feedback to the right phone :oP
