Samsung S4 - no connection in Mexico

Hi,
I'm planning a few weeks in Mexico and hope to connect, likely with a local sim card.  However, last time I was in Merida, Mexico, I could not connect to any network. First I tried my Koodo card, but it couldn't find a (compatible) network. Then I borrowed a sim card from a local friend's phone that worked, but it also did not connect my Samsung.

Is there something with the S4 that prevents this?

I have a Samsung S4, model SGH-I337M.  It is unlocked.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Frank,

You need to have roaming enabled on your account and phone if leaving the country and wish to use your Koodo account. If you wish to use a local SIM, you will need to unlock your S4. Did you purchase it through Koodo? If so, you can request an unlock code for $35.
Thanks Ivan,
roaming is enabled on my phone, but I don't know about the account...  that should not matter if I get a sim from another outfit?

Where can I find this account setting in Koodo?

Have you confirmed your phone is truly unlocked?

In order to roam with Koodo:
Go to Phone services page and then Add-ons page and select Add-ons. If you do not already have Pay Per Use Intl Long Distance add-on ($0/month) in your included services or optional add-ons, add this. In addition, you will need to add International Voice Roaming ($0/month) in order to call and text, while travelling outside of Canada and the U.S.After you’ve added the above feature successfully, return to the Phone services page or return to Add-ons and add International Data Roaming. This feature will not be available until you complete Step 1. This is a $0 add-on and will enable you to use data services while travelling abroad. Just a heads up, you’ll only need to complete this step if you want to use data while travelling. If you’re not planning to use data, you can skip this step.
yes, phone is definitely unlocked, although my account doesn't show it. Last summer I was in NYC and had it unlocked and working with a local sim.
I located the links you mentioned, but they were under "Change my monthly add-ons".
But . . . if I insert a local sim, i.e. from another provider, my Koodo account settings should not have any effect, should they?

Your account will not show if your phone is unlocked.  Try a sim from another provider to see if it works.

Its confusing.  Are you asking solely about using a sim from a diff provider?

We are trying to solve why your koodo card wont work in Mexico.  AND we are trying to solve why a local Mexican sim didnt work in mexico.

Sorry, I seem to create confusion wherever I roam 🙂
I just added the Int'l voice and Data as you suggested, which would have been the reason for my phone with Koodo sim not working in Mexico.
However, that stil doesn't explain the local-sim-not-working issue...  data roaming on the phone is on.

Is your carrier selected to Automatic?

Do you have it set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE/AUTO?

Network mode: "LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)" is checked.

How about your carrier?  Is it Automatic or Koodo?

It looks like it's set to automatic. Thanks for your help. I'll take it with me and try it. Won't be the end of the world if I get a three-week break from being wired to the world.
Ciao,
Frank 🙂
