Reception in subways

I live in Toronto and I take the subway often. Sometimes I am on the subway for 40mins to an hour since I live in North York and venture downtown for hangouts. It would be great if I had a phone that I could use to text/browse the internet/play internet games/watch videos on while I wait to get to my destination. Sometimes it works but then it cuts out right at a spot in my game/video and it makes me sad 😞 Otherwise I am extremely happy I moved from Rogers to Koodo. I have a Nexus 4 that's just over a year old and it's my first smart phone so I'm still in the honeymon phase regarding the amazing things I can do with my phone so I use it often!

It's something everyone in Toronto wants the problem is the tunnels are pretty deep and are concrete boxes so no signal gets to them. Currently a company is installing internet for the subway platforms. Montreal has a similar system and the phone companies just signed on to repeat the signals once everything was in place.

Hello, it has been two years since this thread was created. Any progress on making internet and phone connections on subway? No signal for me at all.

Looks like the technology is taking a little longer than originally planned. Installing repeaters in all those tunnels is not inexpensive and not that easy to cost-justify IMHO.

And here's the background for the TTC implementation. So far, it appears only Wind has bought in to the project.

Wind's actually doing it for the TTC. There's over 30 stations with the capacity to do so, and it seems that it's just not a priority for the other major telecoms to join in. Here is more info on the matter:

Hope Koodo could catch up!  I switched from Wind due to their poor services. I also did not get signal on the subway under Wind.

Out of curiosity, did this include station that actually had it on at the time? Everyone I know with Wind gets service at the areas that it's activated. It simply looks like no one else is interested unfortunately.

I just checked it from Finch to Dundas stations awhile ago.

Well currently it's available from Bloor southwards that I guess Wind has activated on the currently available infrastructure . The wording is a little ambiguous as it could be interpreted to mean only at the stations themselves and not in between. If you were just traveling along there might not have been enough time to detect and connect before it would disappear again. I'll have to s for myself if it'll work within the train. The link following gives exact current info via Wind. http://www.windmobile.ca/subway-coverage

Correct, it is only available in the stations listed and as far into the tunnels as the signal will leak.

IMHO, vast majority of folks will be happy to check their messages while killing time on the platform, or for the commercial courriers, find out where their next pickup is when disembarking.
