Problem disabling background data

I have an older Nexus S with Android 2.3.6. I usually disable the background data to keep data usage low. But recently, I noticed the 3G or wifi top screen indicators spontaneously going from white to green just after I explicitly unchecked the "background data" checkbox. I think some application is overriding my network prefences: anybody has an idea of what is going on?

If the phone is recently acting up, try a factory data reset on the device and turn off the background data like you have in the past. This should work. Good luck.
