Note 2 randomly stops receiving texts/calls until I send/make text or call


My Note 2 (4.4.2) randomly stops receiving texts or calls. Calls go straight to voice mail and I never receive a missed call notification. I won't receive voicemails or the texts until I send an outgoing text or place an outgoing call, then I receive the texts sent to me and any voice mail notifications. It seems only to be when I'm connected to any wifi. Even if I'm using my apps or internet I still miss the texts and calls until I send something outgoing. I have done a battery and Sim pull, updated my software, called koodo twice and have an open support ticket. My phone is on Gsm/wcdma auto connect and I've reconnected to the koodo network. I've been advised not to factory reset s it's not going to help. (I won't root the phone). I was advised by Bernard to post here in case you guys can think of something to try that we haven't tried.

I don't remember if that phone has it but make sure the do not disturb feature is not on. After that I'd do a factory reset as it seems you've exausted all possible avenues

Factory reset has nothing to do with it. Phones from Samsung service are returned in "virgin" condition, and start acting up soon enough apparently.

Exactly. Its not an old problem if people are still experiencing it. I'm still dealing with koodo on sending in my old phone. Really not happy with koodo. I have to pay to send the old phone to them because for some reason their bubble mailers aren't arriving.

Paul we have a legitimate problem and I don't see a solution yet it's people like you that need to listen more if you don't have a better answer than that?

Somethings that help are turning airplane mode on then off it resets your network connection I do this quite a bit it seems to help. Koodo has also told me to dial #21# then hit send it cancels the mysterious path straight to voice mail, but these do not fix the problem just rid it for awhile.

#21# is what you use to cancel call forwarding, just another way to wake up the network.

I apologize as I assumed since the question was marked as answered and there has been no follow up by anybody for months that this was a solved issue. What I find funny is your childish response John on trying to get me in trouble by somebody over a simple response that wasn't Impolite in the slightest.

The "answered" tag and the fact that comments can be inserted in non-chronological order can lead to confusion. Often things are not resolved in the least, and solutions found in comments made a few minutes ago half way up the page are ignored and repeated needlessly.

You post your answer 4 hours ago in response to somebody that posted 11 hours ago who said it was not answered. This is not the first time you have been like this . The community is for help not to show how much you know by answering the way you do.

One of our things is to help guide people as to how we do things in this community and is why I responded to the email I received of every conversion in the community by letting bob know not to respond to old posts that have been marked as answered.

I have to send it in for repairs. Second koodo phone in a row now that had issues out of the box.

Yup there is a few post about this and I am on my third replacement Koodo has another lemon like the LG Cookie I had years ago. It took 2 years before they would admit to it basically while they are still selling the phone they will not admit there is a problem. KODOO LET NOT BE LIKE THAT. We rely on our phones and need to receive our calls we pay our bills in full we should have been provided with phones that work fully??????

There are two options. The first is to re-install the current firmware (4.4.2) onto the device and if problems persist, the second option is to downgrade to an earlier version of Android (4.3). Other than that, there's really not much more that can be offered other than to suggest lodging a complaint with Samsung.

I was just wondering will this fix the problem at hand, and if so why they did not do this before they sent me all these replacements that do not work. I also would need to know how to perform these tasks. Thanks for taking the time to give some possible solutions

The firmware is available from SamMobile. You'll have to register first. Registration and the firmware download are free. You will also need Samsung's firmware flashing utility Odin, there's a link for the Odin download after you select the appropriate firmware for your device. Carefully read the instructions on how to use Odin and how to setup your device to receive the firmware. Model number to search for: SGH-I317M No root required and this won't void your warranty provided that you follow the instructions to the letter. Make sure you have a fully charged battery and that you have all the necessary device drivers loaded on your computer. If you have Kies installed, you already have the drivers. Don't rush or take any shortcuts and read everything twice. Sounds like a big job, hopefully someone will try it and confirm that it works, any idea how long it would take

Not that big a job, probably the most time consuming part is backing up your device and deciding what to keep. Downloading the firmware might take all of fifteen minutes or less, depending on your internet connection speed and size of the firmware file (1.1 GB for 4.4.2). Downloading Odin, a minute or two. Installing the firmware to your device and first boot, up to fifteen minutes and you're done. As mentioned earlier, I don't have the Note 2 so my times may be a little off, but I've used this method on several Samsung products and for the most part this procedure can be performed well within an hour. It's times like this where I wish I had every device Koodo carries.

Both the firmware file and Odin are downloaded to your computer. The firmware will eventually get written or flashed to your phone via Odin.
My samsung note 2 is also doing the same thing if I turn the wifi off problem seems to go away. turning the wifi off is not an acceptable solution. as I would get a huge bill if I use mobile data for watching Netflix with the mhl to hdmi adapter on my tv I have a loner Samsung S3 haven't missed any calls yet and Koodo has my Note 2 witch sure they will just factory reset and say its fine and probably scratch it up more Right now I am not to happy with Koodo will just have to hope my note 2 actually gets a software update to fix it. tech support told me to set my network to WCDMA only This is not the answered my Note 2 still had the problem. turning wifi off seemed to work best and and network on auto connect lte/wcdma/gsm Please post if turning your wifi off is working for you I am interested if it works for anyone else. I will be retesting my note 2 when it comes back from repair I hope Samsung actually fixes it but if not Ill do few days of testing with wifi off and post the results here.
Derek S less than a minute ago I got my phone back I am still having the same problems with it also has some small scratches now 😞 I did more testing with wifi off and I still miss calls sorry its hard to tell what works and doesn't be cause the problem is intermittent I have been video taping the problem to prove my point that there is something going wrong with the note 2 I think someone from Samsung needs to look at the cell radio driver I think its crashing and when you phone out again it resets the driver that's why it takes good 10-15 sec to call out and then works for while again I could be completely wrong My loner Samsung S3 phone never missed a call once while I had it I dropped my phone off again to day got another S3 witch seems to be working correctly. I don't have much hopes that my phone will be fixed. If they don't have it fixed by 3rd time I am returning charger phone box and all cables to the store and filing a complaint to http://www.ccts-cprst.ca/ and of course telling them don't send me a bill cause If you can't honor your side of the contract why should I. I also plan to video tape the drop off maybe Ill buy a Lennon to place on the counter with my phone. I really hope they can find a fix I love everything about the phone accept the miss calls and delayed texts there has to be a way to fix the problem I have a good case and MHL to HDMI adapter so I can watch videos on my tv will really suck having to get new case and accessories again.
