Note 2 can't multitask while on a call?!?

Once I'm on a call with my Note 2, I can't multitask. Easily reproducible... If I call my voice mail and press the home key to try to switch to another app (such as my calendar, which I often want when on a call), nothing happens. It won't leave the in-call screen. Does anyone have a fix for this?

I think it does'nt support that kind of multi tasking. You would need to enable multi-window for it to work. Here's how http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/smartphones/learn-how-to-multitask-on-the-samsung-galaxy-note-ii/

I use my note2 in this manner. I do have multi-window enabled.

Yeah but I tihnk it depends on the cellphone itself

Interesting. My S3 could back out of a call and do whatever else

It's just interesting that the Note 2 (supposedly great for multi tasking) does not support what I now think of as a pretty basic feature hahaha.
My old LG P999 on Wind could do this as well, I'd expect any "smart" phone to have this capability. This has been frustrating me since I got the Note 2 in late August (being able to access your calendar on a call is pretty basic functionality!), I wonder if they'd let me exchange the phone. I wonder if the Alcatel models can do this. Very disappointed in the Note 2 if there's no fix for this, as it's otherwise a very nice phone.

Remember the Note 2 is a (much) older phone now, so I doubt Samsung will still update the OS. But really the place to ask is the Samsung community (whatever community they have) because Koodo does not maintain, update or fix phone operating systems. They just sell the phones 🙂

I do not know this phone that much, but I know it's suppossed to be a basinc thing on each phone. I'd be pretty disapointed at your place to!
Ok, I was playing with the multi window feature which is kind of neat (though no compatible calendar apps), but it doesn't solve the original problem. When in the dialer screen I can pull up the multi window menu, but once a call is in progress it's no longer possible... All it will do is let you talk on the phone, you can't get out of the in-call screen. So I'm thinking this is a hardware limitation of this phone. Can anyone with the Alcatel or Nexus 5 confirm that once they're connected to a call they can also press the home key to continue using the other functions of the phone? I doubt Koodo will go for it, but I may try for an exchange...

My BlackBerry q5, Alcatel idol x+, and any other device I have can pull out of the dialer. Try navigating to settings...apps...phone or dialer..and clear the data and cache. See if that solves the issue. Alternatively you can change the dialer app. Try searching the play store for a different dialer. There is "Simpler Dialer + Contacts" which is nice and plain. Try a few and see what youblike.

Check call settings with the dialer open. See if there is a setting that won't allow you to leave the dialer.

Also you might try a factory reset. But that's a last resort as you'll loose your data / configuration and restore the device to its out of the box state.

Confirmed. In the screenshot, I'm in a call and can invoke S-Planner (calendar), take a screenshot and open other apps if needed. I'm not sure if the Note 2's multi-window feature is the same as the Note 4, but on some apps (not all of them) I can grab the upper right or left hand corners and swipe diagonally, minimizing the size of the dialer window, for example.

OK so I found a workaround... I installed S Pen Toolbox, which lets me customize a toolbar that pops up when I remove the S Pen. I put S Planner, Chrome, Gmail, and S Note in it, and now to access those apps on a call I just remove the S Pen and tap the app icon in the toolbar. When I'm in those apps I still can't use the home key for anything but I can return to the dialer via the notification bar. So this isn't a hardware limitation, it's a weird software issue. I'll keep looking for a proper solution. Here's two screen shots. .. first is the screen I get stuck in where the home button doesn't work, the second shows the pop up menu from S Pen Toolbox.

Did you try anything i suggested? This is a pretty basic feature of a smartphone (multi tasking) , you shouldn't need a workaround.

Tried everything except for the factory reset.

Success! I used "The Cleaner" to free up RAM then tried and the home key was working. Rebooted and it worked until everything loaded. Next used Malwarebytes to do a security audit scan and looked at the list of apps that monitor calls. The only one that looked like a possible culprit was Sony Smart Key (for my headphones). Went into that, disabled the call control options, and my home button now works in a call. (Didn't matter that my headphones weren't plugged in.) So, problem fixed, but what a pain. At least I learned more about the S Pen while figuring it out (the handwriting recognition is phenomenal). So I'm back to loving the Note 2. 😉

Carefully reading an apps' permissions prior to installation also helps. Some apps, as in this instance, will override certain settings on your device. Happy to hear you've resolved the problem!
