No signal (Emergency Calls Only) on 1st Gen Moto G

Hi, I have a 1st Generation Moto G. Overall it's been very reliable. Since last night, I haven't been able to pick up Koodo's signal. It just says "Emergency Calls Only," and I've had Roaming for brief periods (I live close to the US).

Looking through other people's posts, it seems like other's have had a similar issue, but none of the solutions I can find seem to work. I've tried:

- Shutting off and turning the phone back on
- Toggling Airplane Mode On and Off
- The closest I get to a solution seems to be when I go to the "Choose a Network Operator" thing in settings, and select "Koodo." A couple times when I've tried this, it looks like I'm connected for a few seconds but then goes back to Emergency Only.

It's worth noting that when this started happening, I was fiddling with my phone trying to free up storage space. However, all I was doing was deleting large text message conversations, and I turned my phone off and on (which I rarely do).

If anyone can help I'd appreciate it a lot.

Remove the SIM card and insert it again (this would remove oxidation, if any)

Check the APN

Name: Koodo APN: sp.koodo.com
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank

Password: leave blank
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://koo.do/koodomms
MMS Proxy: 74.49.0.18
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 220
Authentication type: PAP
APN type: leave blank

....and try again.

Thanks Tiz. When I try taking the Sim card out and putting it back in, it looks like it works ("Koodo" shows up on the top left of my screen, and I have full bars), but then a few seconds later it'll go away.

When I look at my APN, it's mostly the same as what you wrote. Some differences are:
- Name: You wrote "Koodo" mine says "Koodo SP"
- MMSC: You wrote "http://koo.do/koodomms"; mine says: "http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/koodo/mmsc"
- Authentication type: You wrote "PAP"; mine says "Not set"

Should I change these to match yours?

Yes you should. Feel free to write down your current settings just in case. Then also do as Jonathan saws further down.

Another thing to check is to make sure your network type is set to 3G and not 2G.

Ensure your account is up to date and bill is paid up - or your base plan is topped up if you're on prepaid.

We've done most of the troubleshooting already so the only thing I can think of is testing your SIM in someone else's phone (that's unlocked or a Telus/Koodo device) If it works, then the SIM tray in your phone is shot and needs to be repaired/replaced. If it doesn't, then perhaps your SIM is defective, which is easy/cheap to replace at $5 for postpaid, $20 on prepaid - the prepaid one comes with a $20 activation credit to offset this.

You can also try backing up and factory resetting the device. But try all other things first as this can be a pain in the butt
Remove the SIM card and put it back in. That generally solves the problem. If that doesn't work ring up Koodo's service number (611), or take your phone and SIM to a Koodo Retailer. Hope this helped ^_^

Phone and SIM to Koodo retailer if at all possible. Will settle the issue on the spot. Or if not convenient and phone still bugs 1-866-995-6636 from any phone in Canada

Thanks for the reply! Brought it in, they replaced the SIM card and it's good as new!
All, I brought the phone into the Koodo store, they swapped the SIM card and it's good as new. Thanks everyone for your answers.
