No notification for new SMS

I just bought the Nexus 4, and when I receive a SMS, there is no like "1" or "2" on the message icon. Can I make that appear? Also, I don't receive notification on the screen. It just ring. Can I receive a notification just like the iphone does? Thanks

You can make that appear several ways. Here's my preferred way though--> http://community.koodomobile.com/koodo/topics/_how_to_guide_to_global_badge_notifications_android That will get icons working for all your Apps, not just SMS. If you want popups, there are several options. Personally I use NotifierPro--> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nlucas.notificationtoaster But that Dev has lots of Notification Apps so you should check out some of the free versions to see which best suits your needs.

I thought there would be a way without downloading anything. My Samsung Ace 2x was doing it without downloading anything.

I doubt that very much. There is no android OS that does that specific thing that Iphones do without downloading specific apps.

Nope. Stock Android does track GMail, SMS & Calls natively but doesn't have an option to display the # count. Some like that, some don't. Personally I wish it had the option, but I'm ok with downloading Apps to fill in the gaps. There are free alternatives if all you want are the #'s for SMS, Calls & GMail but not if you want them globally the way iPhone (and my tutorial) does it.

Myke, TouchWiz does that since Android does indeed track them. Other skins do it too (though just SMS/Cals/GMail), pretty much just stock Android doesn't.

I'm not talking about tracking them. Steeven was talking about making the numbers appear in the upper hand corner of the app, which is the Android OS doesn't do.

TouchWiz does for SMS/Calls/EMail as do other skins. Stock Android does not.

John, I am referring to the Stock Android.....

Clarity at the beginning would have helped with the confusion, LoL. You said "...There is no android OS..." but skins do make use of it...and while you & I might know the difference, too many people these days think that Samsung IS Android which it definitely isn't. I hate that generalization by the mainstream User (especially as a Nexus enthusiast) & media. No worries, moving on.

Right, Android OS, referring to the stock.

Why the Galaxy Ace 2x was doing it? Its an Android ????

The Ace 2X wouldn't have done it without specific apps. On stock applications, it won't happen.

Yes it happens, and I didn't download apps. It was doing it the first time I use it

No Steeven, it didn't happen without apps. I have dealt with Android for years. It does not happen unless you download specific apps for it.

Why it does then? It was brand new and I receive # on the message icon. I even receive a pop-up when someone text me.

Because it's not the stock application. You are clearly using a downloaded messaging app that has that feature.

Steeven, TouchWiz is Samsung's version of Android - they take the stock version of Android found on Nexus devices and add their own customizations. TouchWiz displays #'s on the Samsung SMS App, Samsung EMail App & Samsung Phone App. Those are the only Apps that show the #'s on their icons on Samsung phones unless you follow the guide I linked to (or a couple other options via the Play Store). Stock Android (the one found on Nexus devices) doesn't display #'s on the App icons themselves unless you follow the guide linked to (or a couple other options via the Play Store). Your Nexus 4 is not using TouchWiz, it's stock Android so you won't be able to get them to work the way it did on your Ace 2X unless you download Apps to achieve it. You might want to try Notifyer+ also--> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.cornwall_solutions.notifyer_plus It's a more simple way to get the # count than MissedIt...but has its own limitations.

I knew it! Thanks John. Yes there are only # on the apps you mentionned. Myke, instead of arguing what you don't know, just let other people answer to the question. Thanks

Steve, I've been explaining what you were confused about. You were under the impression that the stock applications on an Android device showed the numbers, but that isn't the case. As John has basically stated(which is what I was stating) is that you have to download something specific in order to get the result that you wanted. If you purchase the Ace 2X, that will not show the # of messages on it's own. That is what I was trying to explain. I wasn't trying to argue at all. I was explaining, in perfectly basic English, what you were assuming was happening without something being downloaded, that something did needed to be downloaded. I do know what I am talking about Steeven, so instead of trying to bash me for explaining, maybe try and accept the information that I am providing to you.

Your information was not as clear as john. I was telling you it was notification for MESSAGE and you were arguing that it was a downloaded one. When I told you it was brand new, you just had to tell me the same thing as john, not telling me again that I was clearly using a downloaded messaging app, which is not since it was brand new.

Yes, the STOCK APPLICATION FOR MESSAGING does not come with a number notification. You would have to download something specific for it. I could not have said it anymore basic than that.

How many times will I have to tell you I didn't not download ANYTHING on my ace 2x to provide notification number for sms... Damn!! It was the stock application on it.

No Steeven, this is exactly what I am talking about. Both myself and John have told you that the stock application DOES NOT PROVIDE YOU WITH A # NOTIFICATION OF HOW MANY NEW MESSAGES THERE ARE. For whatever reason, you have lead yourself to believe the opposite when it's not true at all. I've had many Android devices. None of them have EVER had a notification # of new messages with only the stock messaging application. We have an Ace 2X as a dummy phone. That phone has the stock messaging application. It does not get the # of messages notifications. The only thing that appears is the envelope in the notification status bar. THAT IS IT.

Obviously, you two will not see eye to eye. I'm not looking to pick a fight with either of you. This is getting way out of hand. Just stop. YOU go to that corner and YOU go to the other. TIME OUT!

AHAH love it Tyler. Funny. What I understood from John is that on Samsung it comes with it, so for me, I take that as a stock app my ace 2x, not on android. And the purpose of my question was to know if there was one on the Nexus 4, NOT on Android. The answer was NO. That's it!!! You didn't have to argue with "you download something on android". The way John explained it was WAY more easier to understand. Thanks John
