Did you save the contacts to your sim card or phone? If you saved in the phone you can use a USB cable and plug your phone into a computer to try and retrieve that information.

Did you... read his post? He already tried plugging the phone into his computer but since the password is on it he can't access any info on his computer.

https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager You could try resetting the password through that if it's connected to the internet but that will enable another lock so I'm not unsure if you can unlock your device remotely at this point. this is why you always save your contacts to your Gmail account so they'll be, for the most part, indefinite.

Doesn't the Nexus 4 save all contacts to the google account? When I added all my contacts, it only gave me the option of my gmail.

it likely does, but apparently i did not select that option
Hate to say that, but it seems like the only solution is to get a replacement screen. You can't reboot the phone to by-pass the password, because you lose the info. And if contacts are not backed up on gmail, you can't access them either way.

Doesn't seem like a worthwhile solution to me, unless he has no other way to get those contacts' information.
