Moto Z play wifi repeatedly dropping/reconnecting.


I've had a moto Z play for a couple months now, running Android 7.0. I noticed it since updating to Nougat, but I can't say for sure it wasn't happening before that, because I noticed my data usage increased since I got this phone. Wifi connects normally, but will randomly disconnect for several seconds then reconnect on its own, more than 30 times/day. It does this on both home and work wifi. Factory reset my phone and it's still happening before reinstalling any of my apps. Does my phone have a hardware problem or is this a known software issue?

Robert, thanks for the response. There is no option in the advanced menu for wifi assist, or anything remotely similar. Only 'install certificates', 'wifi direct' and two wps options.

Hi. Are you on 7.0 or 7.1? There were known WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity issues with 7.0 that Google has fixed in a newer version. Lenovo may not have baked them in to the Play update though.

Have you tried resetting the network settings?
Settings/More/Network Settings Reset

You will not lose your data, only your saved WiFi and Bluetooth connections.
I'm on 7.0. I checked for updates and there's nothing else available. Tired network reset first, then factory reset after that.

AFAIK, Android 7.1 is not yet officially available for the Moto Z Play from Koodo. I have the same phone. I don't have that issue though.
As per Robert's advice, make sure to have wifi assist off in order to prevent data usage while on wifi.
You say you incur data usage during a call. Are you using Truecaller or Truedialer on your phone? Are you using any apps that populate adds in the notifications? Those could burn up some data.

Another possible action to try is to wipe the cache partition. Sometimes file fragments from a previous Android installation are left behind which may cause software problems with the current Android OS.
