Magic Jack on an Android Phone

I have the Magic Jack feature downloaded to my phone and it's using a TONNE of data. Can anyone give me a suggestion on how to limit this? My b/f lives in the States and it's free to use it to call, but my data usage is through the roof! Any ideas??

For Magic Jack, Use WIFI as much as possible -or- If calling the USA is important to you you do have options Koodo offers a long distance saver add on that makes calls to the USA 5 cents per minute, right now i believe you're paying 45 cents per minute. Jajah gives you the option to convert unlimited foreign numbers to local numbers for a fee of. 03 cents per minute (prepaid) and rounded to the next minute. This service offers an access number so you can call in and then dial whatever number you wish like a calling card. Numbers you likely won't call again or call infrequently. SKYPE TO GO, this service is 2.99 a month and includes unlimited calling to up to 30 numbers in the USA. Like Jajah it converts foreign numbers into local numbers. It also has a local access number you can use to call any number outside of the 30 you've created. You can also register up to 20 phones so your family can use your Skype To Go numbers as well. If you have a nights and weekends package or unlimited anytime minutes, you can talk as much as you want and not worry about extra charges. At least One Mobile Master uses the service along with an unlimited plan to keep in touch with his family in FL. Me!

There is actually no charge per minute for the calls. The calls are free because I have a Florida number so it's local for him and local for me. It's the data that's being used for the phone calls that's the issue. I do have the nights/weekends (beginning at 5 pm) and the Magic Jack calls actually don't use my minutes. The Skype to Go might be an option ... but he would have to have this as well? Thank you both so much for you input ... keep it coming! 🙂

no he doesn't have to have it! For him, Tell him to get a Google Voice Number for free Then he can make unlimited long distance calls to anywhere via his Google Voice number. He calls your regular number and the google voice service changes it to a local number. He can write down that local number to call you from any phone he registers That's how I call my wife (I'm a trucker). We talk for hours.

If he has an android phone he can download the Google Voice App, it integrates with the dialer. For non android phones like BlackBerry or iPhone there is the HTML5 app available at http://voice.google.com/m EDIT: TIP: Don't setup your skype to go number to point at his google voice number set it up to point at his actual number. if you don't your call quality may suffer since both services are VOIP.

So will the Skype to Go or the Google voice number use up data as well? Is it something I'll still have to use on wifi in order to avoid over the top data usage? Sorry for the questions, but this is new to me. I was always able to just call forward my Magic Jack number to my regular phone and I had a plan with unlimited incoming, problem solved. However, when I renewed my Magic Jack, it no longer offers that feature. Why, I don't know!! It was SO easy when you could do that.

No on your end (canada) there is no data used when making those calls. On your b/f side Google voice only uses a tiny bit of data to convert the number. My wife and I talk for 1200 minutes a month. Her data use is never more than 40mb and none of that 40mb was used for calls.

And when you call him you're actually calling his cell so no data use there. It's only when he calls out that the tiny bit is used. But it's not used to transmit your voice. And if he writes down the number used he can use it to directly dial and text you with absolutely no data use or long distance charges.

Yeah, use it on wifi or stop using a voip phone service.

If you have to use the Magic Jack app, use it on wifi only. Depending how long the calls can be, Koodo does have the LD saver feature for $2/month that would give you a rate of $0.05/minute to call the USA.
