Limited service: emergency calls only

My HTC One V keeps saying "Limited service: emergency calls only". I've tried everything: rebooting, taking the SIM card out and putting it back in, turning airplane mode on and off, I've even done a full factory reset and calling/texting still doesn't work. Also, my phone does not have a warranty anymore. What should I do? Thanks in advanced.

Make sure the network mode is not set to gsm only.
That’s what I do: I drink and I know things.

It's set to GSM / WCDMA auto. Should I change it to WCDMA only?

Nope, that should be fine. Are you putting the back cover on securely? A poor design aspect of the One V is that's where the antenna contacts are... so if you don't have the back cover on the phone, then there won't be any service. If that still doesn't work I really think you should get a new phone.

Even if it does work you should probably get a new phone. The HTC One V was a piece of junk.

I have the HTC one v that I Bought from a friend about four months ago and I am having the same prob. Did you resolve the issue and if so how.. I really don't want to buy another phone help would be greatly appreciated
