Is the Moto Z Play (and other phones) locked?

Are the phones available from koodomobile.com locked to Koodo? Specifically asking about the Moto Z Play, but I guess what they do to one phone they would do to others.

Unless it's a google phone (pixels) it's going to come locked. Moto phones however have very cheap unlock codes. You can get them on eBay for 3-5 dollars.

Also, this is not carrier-specific. All carrier phones in Canada with the exception of google phones (Nexus/Pixel) are carrier-locked. Even the carriers who "try to be different" such as sub brands (Koodo/Fido/Virgin), region-specific carriers (Freedom/Eastlink/Videotron/Sasktel).
I got my MZP unlocked on ebay for $3.08 CAD. You rather get a carrier-locked phone like a Moto Z Play with a huge activation credit with Koodo and pay pocket change on eBay for the unlock code. If carriers in Canada were forced to only carry unlocked phones, you'll see the prices of the phones go up.

Ok thanks for the info. I think you might have replied, but is your Koodo Moto Z Play a single-SIM? Does the model # end in -02?

Hi Peter. I have a MZP myself and yes. It's Single SIM (just like every other carrier phone in Canada) and the model # does end in -02 (just like every other Moto Z Play around the world with the exception of the Verizon Droid and the Chinese CDMA variants).
Model # ending in -02 is a mix of single and dual sim variants. This is semantics, as Motorola/Lenovo could have used different model numbers per region, etc. but in this case they didn't and only made distinction for Verizon Droid and Chinese CDMA variants. This is good because it means you'll get the same LTE bands as MZP's from India, Brazil, etc. meaning it's a great phone for fast data in many destinations.

Well I got my MZP. I really like it so far. What eBay user/seller did you use to unlock? I only had a quick look but what I found cost a lot more. Thanks!

Using "Koodo Moto Z Play unlock code" as the search term I got 3-7 dollar returns.

@Peter: item # 221389544181. I've ordered from that seller and got the code super fast, and it's dirt-cheap 😃

Ok thanks. I got one that works from item # 201687298693. Turned out being 57 cents more than yours 😉
