Is it possible to update a phone equipped with android 4.0 to the most recent system (4.3 or 4.4)

I want to upgrade to an android phone, but do not have the money for a new one. I have found an older model equipped with 4.0 and I want to know if it is possible to update to the most recent system.

Which phone is it? If it's an older model then it may no longer be supported with official updates. You can also look into a process called rooting. It involves changing the OS by unlocking the bootloader and then loading a custom Rom of your own. You can take a look at xda-developers for tips on how to get started.

If you want the most recent version of Android which is 4.4 then check out the Moto G from koodo which just received the update to 4.4 yesterday and only costs $150 which is great if your strapped for cash right now and it's an awesome phone. It actually could sell for twice the price it's that good.

If it were twice the price I'd expect at least 16gb and possibly a better camera but otherwise it's the best $150 phone around. You can get it for free on Tab small!

Yeah as Jonathan said the big thing to keep in mind is what phone it is. I'm pretty sure the S II X was updated to 4.0 or 4.1 or something like that but it's highly unlikely it'll be officially getting 4.4. I also have to second Pauls recommendation of the Moto G. It's literally my favourite Android of all the ones I've used and is quite a steal (if you have the funds to make it work).

If it is an relatively old phone (released over 18 months ago) then it is highly unlikely you will be able to upgrade the OS to Android 4.3 or 4.4. Manufacturers tend to drop updates to phones that have been on the market for longer than 18 months. It's unlikely the phone will run the latest versions of Android (except possibly 4.4 which has been optimized for low memory devices). Given that you mention that the phone is running 4.0, it seems to be a phone over 2 years old, so there won't be any official upgrades to 4.3/4.4 for it.
