Hi Sagar,

How much usage are you planning to do while away? You can take a look at the international roaming add-ons available that are listed here
Well, I won't be making any calls unless it's urgent but i need to keep track of all calls and messages I receive while I am outside Canada. Not sure which add-on to choose.

You should buy a plan that includes enough minutes to cover your expected incoming calls . While incoming texts are free, incoming calls you answer will consume minutes.
If you are in easy access of wi-fi, you may want to use Skype or similar to call in to retrieve your voicemails, and call folks back, rather than answering calls.

Whatsapp is pretty good too and it is free.

Do note however that if you use Whatsapp, you will need to be connected to wifi for it to work, make sure that your data is not turned on!

Connection with internet is required also for Skype, Fongo, etc. Nowadays it is quite easy to find hotspots at restaurants, bars, libraries, tourist offices, and so on.

I thought Whatsapp required all users be using the Whatsapp App? Is it a direct replacement for SMS clients?

Yes, sorry, it requires also the other party to be on Whatsapp. I use it quite often and I got too excited.

What you can use is a voip app recommended to me called TextNow. It's like Fongo only texts are included whereas Fongo charges I believe 2 dollars a month for unlimited texting. That way you can keep in touch when around wifi or even if the prepaid data packages are good where you are, run it 24/7.
