I want to drop to a prepaid $15 a month plan. Can I carry over the unused time and data from my $30 plan?

Hi: I have a $30 a month plan and I really don't need all the time and data that comes with it. I want to drop to a $15 a month prepaid plan but will the unused data and time be carried over in the form of a booster? Thanks for your help

You get to keep anything that was a booster. If it was part of the old base-plan, you will loose it.

Mary-Anne
Are you sure you are not just talking about your Boosters?

From what I can tell, there was never any data included in pre-paid, so if you had data, you got it as a booster which will carry over. You still get unlimited texting in the 15$/month base-plan, only thing you would loose out on is the minutes.

You are most definetly correct, Mathieu! There isn't and has never been a base plan in existence that includes data. If she has data, it's a booster and will carry over when she renews her base plan 🙂

She probably has the $30-1GB booster from what she said in her original post

That's what I thought, but I never paid much attention to pre-paid so was not 100% sure. Thanks Ahmad!

Hi guys thanks for all the info. I never signed up for a booster though. My original plan included 100 MB of data for $30 a month. I've not used the data even once and barely even use the phone itself.  It's purely a way to text with my daughter and for emergencies only. Clearly I'm wasting money. Maybe I'll stop at their booth on the weekend to see what they can do for me. I don't want have to start from scratch though :(

Unfortunately mins and data from postpaid plans do not carry over. If you want to switch to prepaid you will also need to buy a prepaid sim ($20) but it includes a $20 prepaid credit with it. If you want to keep your number, do not canel your postpaid account. Just get a prepaid sim and activate that. When it comes time to choose your number just say you want to port an existing number.

I think the OP means she's on a $30 postpaid plan and wants the $15 prepaid instead. If that's the case, then the answer is sort of. You will get a final bill with any outstanding Tab balances plus a pro rated month of usage. So if you leave halfway through your billing cycle, you'll only be charged up to that day instead of the entire month. It's not really a credit on the prepaid account, but you won't have to pay for any unused days.

After noticing the tags, I think Jonathan is right.

In this case, nothing is kept, and Mary-Anne, you will restart as a brand new Koodo customer, need to buy a new 20$ SIM card for your phone, and activate a new account and selfserve. At that point you can get new boosters, but you won't be able to transfer anything over to the new account, apart from your existing phone number.

Clarification on what Jonanthan I posted: If you transfer from monthly to prepaid on Koodo, you will not have to pay the rest of your billing period on the monthly account. It's billed in advance, so if you make the change with 10 days left in your monthly billing cycle, your final bill will be whatever is owing on your tab less 10 days credit for the unused portion of your monthly charge plus any overages (on a prorata basis). There is no carry-over: your monthly account is closed once and for all, and you get credit for unused time.

Your prepaid account starts with a clean slate. I recommend registering a credit card for automatic base plan renewals: you will save 10% on your base plan each and every month. On the $15 base plan, Koodo will charge you $15 + tax (about $17.50 per month) but credit back $1.50 to your balance, which you can use against boosters to to skip a payment once a year or so.

The mechanics of the switch are very smooth on-line, you can keep your number and continue to have access to your monthly account for 90 days, so if you need to have printed copies of bills for whatever purpose, I would do that in a timely manner.

Don't be shy to ask any more questions.

So I don't need another SIM card then, I don't need to start from scratch?  This is good news. But to be clear If I go online now and and switch to a $15 BP I would have to purchase a booster if I wanted talk time. Right? They would not carry over any remaining minutes or data from my old plan, I will lose that. Yes?

You [i]will  need a new SIM card switching from monthly to prepaid. Boutique price is $20 + tax but that gets credited back to you on activation. If you can't get to a boutique, try eBay.ca since most associate retailers do not carry them. You will also need a talk or date booster if you want to do anything other than text.

No carry-over of old plan minutes or data, but $ credit for the unused portion when your monthly account is closed. If you really want someting simple, wait to do the pre-paid set up on the last day of your monthly billing cycle. No credit, no loss, no complications.
Yes, I will do exactly that!  Thanks
