I have only 8gb available on a 16gb

I bought a 16gb phone... Yet, I only have 8gb available. No, in fact, before I even downloded anything, it said I only had 4 gb available. Was I ripped off? I have the LG K4 (2017) phone.

No. The 16 GB is the total amount of memory available on the phone. When you start it the Operating System has to load, as well as all the standard apps. These consume a fair bit of the memory, leaving a portion for your use. You can remove a few of the apps you do not use, and on some phones add an SD memory card to gain more space.

It just sucks. I bought it thinking I would have 16 available space, but can only download 4gb of stuff.

K4 specs show 8 GB on-board only. But you can add an inexpensive 32 G SD card for your media. Keeping your internal memory relatively free will optimize the phone's performance.

Every computer ever built has the same issue. I remember the same problem when PCs had less than 640K of RAM, and the OS used more than half. Things moved really slowly as data was paged out to floppy disks.

I believe you have the wrong phone Bob. OP has the LG K4 (2017) which has the option of 8 or 16GB, although Koodo appears to only sell the 8GB version.
It still will accept an SD card of up to 32GB and this is still a good option.

Thanks for all the replies. Does that mean I was lied to? I'm personally with Koodo, and so... Does that mean when I was told it was 16gb they were wrong?

We weren't there to be able to make that's judgement, but be it an intentional lie, an honest mistake, or a misunderstanding, Koodo only sells the 8GB version. If that isn't enough for you, and you're still within the 15 day return window, you can always turn it in for a phone that'll better fit your needs. The Moto G play for instance comes with 16gb of memory and expandable storage.

Moto G4 Play, LG X Power & Samsung Galaxy J3 all have 16 GB internal storage and are all available on tab small.
