Remove your sim Or Place your phone in airplane mode turn on wifi Or Don't answer the phone or text anyone or use data Or Purchase a roaming add on

Or Unlock your phone and use a US prepaid provider like T Mobile or Cricket if you want to communicate back home
Best way to avoid roaming costs is to add a US roaming plan on to your phone or simply switch it into airplane mode. You can turn WIFI back on after this and use the phone on WIFI only without occurring charges, just make sure you see the airplane symbol on your phone on the top corner.
If the phone is left on, turn off data. In BC all incoming texts received while away are free, not sure of other provinces. Do not check your voicemail as this is a roaming cost. Do not answer calls.

One of the things I have used and like a lot about Koodo is the automatic $5/100 international texts feature when I am out of country (to the USA).
I get a [i]"Welcome tot he USA" text from Koodo as I cross the border, notifying me of the automatic $5 charge if I text within, into or from the US.
So I don't answer the phone down there, just use it as a pager, and text all I want. In 2 weeks early 2017, it cost me $10 in additional charges for [b][i]lots [i]of texting. I can sure live with that!
Pulling out the sim card in anticipation of a loss, but most people are honest and I bank on that. Paying the $35 (?) to unlock it and putting another sim card in seems like a very good idea if one travels internationally often.
