How to put a hold on billing while out of country


I'm traveling outside of Canada to the UK and will be using a local phone while I'm there for 5 months. I have the the old $25/month plan that doesn't exist anymore. How do I keep my Koodo plan active without paying my full monthly bill for the months I'm away from the country? I will not be using the phone while I'm outside of Canada.

If you make any change at all, such as going on seasonal hold ($15 per month), your old grandfathered plan will not be available when you come back. If your number is not important to you, it might be cheaper to cancel service entirely for 5 months, and then resume under a new plan when you get back. You will have to pay off any existing tab when you cancel. Get an unlock code from Koodo beforehand though if you want to use your phone with a local SIM overseas. You will have to do the calculation yourself, preferably over a longer time period such as the coming year. 5 x 15 plus 7 x 28 (cheapest current plan) = 271 [maintains number] 0 x 15 plus 7 x 28 = 196 + tab payout [drop service & re-start upon return].

Thank you for the great answer! It annoys me I can't put a hold on it without jeopardizing my $25/month plan. Does getting the unlock code cause any changes to my phone plan? Through my research, there's a chance my Galaxy S2 (Jurassic plan, Jurassic phone :P) won't work in the UK but if it does I can save on getting a new one.

Or if you really want to keep your plan, you can continue to pay the plan price. Total for the coming year will be : $25 x 12mo = $300

Originally had Mayumi's calculation in my comment above. Advantage here is that you can actually use your phone if you are willing to pay the roaming charges. For $29 above the suspension scenario for a full year, this may be worth it, considering that you can then hang on to your jurassic plan forever going forward.

Unlocking your phone has no impact on your plan
I have the same issue, though my plan is $45 and I am not able to change my plan to the $15/month option through self serve though I have been a customer for over a year and on automated payments

If your self serve doesn't let you change to the seasonal hold plan, you will need to call customer service. *611 from your Koodo phone. Tell them you tried through self serve but you couldn't do it. They will help you. Also, seasonal hold is plan change. You will need to pick a new plan when you come back.

How long will you be gone for? You may end up paying a lot more once you come back as your $45 plan may no longer be available.
