How to Back Up Data on Nexus

I need to back up my entire Nexus 4 onto my PC so I can do a hard reset. I've googled how to do this properly, but I still am not understanding. I'm tired and frustrated and on my last nerve about this ridiculous issue. Can anyone give me a step-by-step on how to back up and restore this thing? Thank you in advance.

What are you trying to back up? Photos, music, contacts, other assorted files? Connect your Nexus 4 to your PC with your micro USB cable. It should show up in your removable drives on your computer (and make sure there's no screen lock on your device). Select it. Now you'll see stuff like Android, DCIM, etc. these are the folders in your phone. Go through them and copy/paste anything of value to you onto a folder on your computer that you'll remember. DCIM is where your camera pictures are stored, which I'm going to assume is important. To back up contacts, go to your People app and then hit the menu button. Select "Share visible contacts". Make sure all the ones you want are there. Then select email and send the file to yourself. The file it saved is a ".vcf" file, which stands for virtual contacts file. This has your phones #s in it. When you open that file from the email after the phone's been restored, they'll reappear. Make sure you try saving your contacts to your Gmail from now on so they'll sync and be available on other devices in the future. Now you can factory reset the phone. You can do this in Settings > Backup and Reset > Factory data reset.
Thank you so much! I will give this a try tomorrow.
Thanks Jonathan
Personally, I use G Cloud Backup and find it quite efficient. Set it to backup what items you want to retain and it keeps the backup up to date. If you ever need to hard reset, just make sure it's done a recent update, hard reset, reinstall the program, sign back into it and restore. I often back up to pc too but this just makes sure I don't lose too much. Free upto a certain data threshold too.
I will look into that, too. Thank you.
