Google Play Store Carrier Billing Option

Userlevel 2
Hi there, I was looking through the updated Google Play Store app and noticed that there's an option to bill my carrier directly for app and in-app purchases. When I tried to activate it, the process failed and and I was indicated to contact my carrier 🙂 After a little research I found that this feature (according to the Google website) is available in Canada to Rogers, Fido, Bell, and Telus customers. I'm wondering if you could implement this feature for us as well? You could simply implement the option of a (customer determined) monthly spending cap to prevent surprised clients with huge bills 😛 Just send a reminder text when Google requests the feature be activated from the play store to the customer to activate the cap 🙂

Yeah, I agree with this. It would be nice to be on par. Although to be honest, I never use it since it just bills to my credit card.

That's the reaction I expected to this, not everyone needs it but it would be nice to have it for the subscribers that do 🙂

I wonder if Koodo will offer this. Carrier billing through other means (such as text based payments) seem to generate all sorts of complaints from customers denying the purchase. Especially when the phone user is a child of the account holder. Complaints (justified or not) often result in credits which means lost revenue for Koodo.

Well, yes I guess that's true. But unlike credit cards which effectively have no limit (just your credit limit ), carrier billing has a spending cap option I believe. So wouldn't there be LESS risk of sticker shock? 🙂
Activation of carrier billing is opt-in only, its not like every phone will automatically have this option enabled. So no chance of surprise charges to your bill.If you have kids just call and block it on the account so they can't activate it if you don't want it.
And nowadays the play store requires a password for all purchases, so if parents are giving their password to kids they know will abuse it,,, I don't even think I need to say anymore 😛

It would just be nice to have the option for people who either don't have credit card, or maybe live near their credit limit and would like to be able to spend a few bucks here and there and charge it to their phone bill 🙂

Really, there aren't more people with interest in this? How can I get this seen better to get a more realistic idea of the interest level here? Because one random thread started by me does not equal an accurate representation of every customers needs 😛

Every idea gets reviewed by a team at Koodo, regardless of the support that it may receive in the community. These things take time to implement.

Thank you, I didn't know that all ideas were reviewed regardless of interest. And it shouldn't take too long given the fact Koodo's parent label Telus already has it 😛

You said you've worked for Dev teams then you should understand that these things take time considering it's one of hundreds of ideas they already working on. Also things need to be thoroughly tested before they're released which takes months.

@aaron 🙂 We'll look into this. Sometimes it comes down to priorities and how it affects our business and customers. Having TELUS on our side helps though 🙂

What do you mean limit it? What were trying to do here is open another payment method, for purchases from the Google Play store.

I believe for direct carrier billing there might be a cap of 25.00 dollars a month. Furthermore Im pretty sure you can set up your Google play so you need to input a password before the purchases will be processed ( for those of us with children). I'm curious as to what's koodos position as a company is on this topic

This thread is 3 years old. Try not revive old threads next time as it brings old information back up and it can get mixed with current information.

Brad, a few things..
First off, this post is 3 years old.
Secondly, the "limit" she was referring to was confining your carrier billing limit to the google play store, which I thought was a silly question because this post is only asking for it to be applied to the Play Store, so I don't even know why she said that.
Thirdly, up at the top, I already pointed out that App Stores already have a password to prevent purchases.
And finally, I also said that existing carrier billing options already have a monthly cap.., You can even ask for your cap to be 0 dollars if you want...

PS - Sorry Allan, I started typing this message as you hit submit I guess. Had to finish....
