Getting a new phone on existing sim only plan

Hi, I have a sim only plan with koodo and I have positive $100 tab balance. I am looking to get a new phone from koodo (ALCATEL ONETOUCH Idol).

Now, the offer I am getting from the Koodo website is the following:
Retail Price $312.00
Positive Tab -100.00
Activation credit -$144.00
Tab Discount: -68.00

If I understand correctly, after purchasing this phone I will owe $68 to Koodo which I have to pay in $3 installments for next 24 months.

I was wondering if someone could help me with the following questions:

  • If I purchase this phone, will it effect my current plan ($45, 1GB Canada wide data)? I am presuming that there will be no changes apart from additional $3 per month.
  • Once I get the phone, is it possible to pay $68 in a single transaction, instead of paying $3 per month. I don't like getting stuck in long contracts?
I have no experience of Koodo Tabs and phone purchases so I wanted to get my answers clarified before getting stuck in a contract for two year.

Thank you.

You have the pricing exactly correct.
Yes your plan will not change.
And you only get the activation credit if you put it on a tab but nothing is stopping you from going onto your self serve and paying it off after that, so pretty much yes you can just pay the 68.

Yes just give them the $68 at time of purchase and you won't have a Tab.

As Mitchell said, just make sure you activate using the tab or else you loose that 100$ activation credit. You might have to wait for your first bill (pay the first 3$) and then you will be able to pay the remainder of the tab on your next bill.
Thank you for the quick replies guys. You have been very helpful. Much appreciated. 🙂

I had a similar discussion at the Kodoo store not too long ago - unfortunately, I forget what they said in detail, but it might take a little longer than just one bill. For unlocking phones for instance they make you wait 90 days after purchase or otherwise they take the discount back.

Judging from previous discussions re:.gift cards, activation credits, etc., I think that you should resign yourself to the tab for at least 90 days to be 100% certain.

Keeping tab for 90 days sounds like a wise option. Thanks for your suggestions guys.
