Get new Koodo phone from 3rd party seller and keep grandfathered plan (with 10% off)?

Hey Koodo community and Mobile Masters.

So basically I have the "Canada Wide Double Promo 30" plan since late 2012, which includes 150 daytime minutes, evening and weekends@7PM, unlimited SMS/MMS and 200 MB data (with overages at 2 cents/MB - which I love). On top of that I have a positive balance of $50-ish and I have 10% off my plan so I pay just $27/month.

My current plan fits my needs perfectly (I never exceeded the minutes included in my plan) but my phone (unlocked Galaxy S Glide, originally from Rogers) is getting old, and the headphone hole works intermittent so I can't enjoy listening to music as much as I want to. So I'm looking for a new phone.

A brand new Galaxy S3 is what I was considering, but according to the new Koodo policy that came along the current plans, if I bought a new phone I'd have to pick one of the new plans (which I definitely don't want). And even if I bought my phone outright to have no balance I'd keep my plan but lose the 10% off - which I don't want.

But, just yesterday, I went into a 3rd party seller (Best Buy Mobile) and was told by the seller that if I picked a Koodo Galaxy S3 from them my plan wouldn't be affected (and, I believe, the 10% off would stay).

Can you guys confirm that? (I don't mind not using my positive balance, keeping the plan and the 10% off is my priority)

Thanks

Félix, yes you can do exactly what you want but you don't have to go to a third party. You can buy a phone outright from Koodo and still keep it all!

I was told otherwise in one Koodo shop, in 2 different Koodo Authorized dealers and over the phone with customer service. But I'll try again and see what I can do.

Sounds like those dealers were wrong. If you buy the phone outright you can keep both your plan and the 10%.

Also you can use your positive tab towards a new phone, so you just need to pay the difference.
(Using new tab cause loose your 10%).

And if you get a S3, you might not pay a lot upfront specially with your positive tab. But pay a little more upfront get you a much better phone in a long run. Here is a link that you can compare phones. (It's fun to play around)

Thanks. I usually compare specs with GSM Arena. But I'll be happy with S3. I prefer to pay under $200 and change in a year or 2 than pay $600 and change in 2 years or 3. I'll get more value for my money that way, IMO.

What I want the most is a decent specs phone where I can put in a 64 GB SD card. Not much more.

Then you shouldn't consider the S III. It's barely any better than the S Glide. It's not getting updated any more and Koodo just discontinued it so it might be hard to find leftovers. You should look at the HTC M8 or G3 for best bang for your buck. Or if you like Samsung, at least get the S4.

And now the new Moto G ( 3rd Gen ) just came out.    Great economical phone with nice specs, only handles 32GB sd card,  Bonus, it will get all the Android updates as they come out and its Water Resistant.

I'm with Spence, definitely check out the new Moto G over the S3 or your going to have a miserable time every time you use your phone, the Moto G 3rd Gen has been impressing everyone I've seen using it as like the previous versions it runs as fast and smooth as the much more expensive flagship's in 95% of usage scenarios. Plus you get the exact same camera that is on last year's Nexus 6 which is amazing for the price of the Moto G 3rd Gen. Seriously get the Moto G or you'll be kicking yourself for getting the S3 and this is coming from a very big Samsung fan the S3 is garbage now it's completely outdated and underpowered.

I might consider the HTC One M8, it is now less pricey than it used to. Moto G looks cool but a 64 GB SD card is sine qua non for me as I listen to a lot of music, I want to have it all on my phone.

Moto G is only 32 GB. M8 is 128, nice.

I's go with the new Moto G over the M8 anyday. HTC sucks at making devices... IMO. 🙂

In what aspects does it suck?
