facebook messenger sms question

I made the fb messenger as my default sms. My plan includes picture messaging but last time I tried (while ago on hangouts) I got charged data on it so I never bothered again. My question is can I send pictures and stuff to people through the messenger app without any hidden charges? (not fb friends but through sms). Thanks

Hangouts Facebook and all those apps cost data which is why u were charged. Normal MMS sent thru texts do not count as data towards your monthly total so u actually cost yourself money. Your best bet is to send pics thru MMS normally. Through the normal messenger.

If you mean specifically the native SMS on phones then that's correct it won't use your data to send pictures and such. Fb messenger uses data even for SMS. If just texts then you're talking bytes per text but whatever the picture is in terms of data size it will take that much data. It's technically not a hidden charge because FB messenger states it uses data but I guess it's not clear. Unless you're on wi-fi then it's no charge to your wireless plan.

Goran is that the case with the new way FB started doing it being able to send actual SMS as of yesterday or are you just considering text based messages as SMS? I haven't looked into it yet but I'm assuming you must know how the change works so I'd love to know, thanks.

I'm considering before the changes started yesterday. I wasn't aware of the changes honestly. I double checked when I posted that first by going to their Messenger Help Center (FAQ). I guess it hasn't been updated yet?

Looking further now the androidcentral and androidpolice announcements on it doesn't specify about data charges. They say it will send SMS/MMS via the app like Google Hangouts and it'll be in purple instead of the usual blue.

Im going to assume it will incur data charges until they declare otherwise as when you open FB Messenger, it automatically starts data usage. This would be neat if they can somehow can the charges associated with it. This is all i can find regarding ANY charges:

"Starting today in most countries, users can open Messenger for Android, go to their settings, select “SMS” and turn on “Default SMS App.” All your SMS conversations will then appear in Messenger as purple threads, alongside your blue Facebook chats. You’ll still be able to receive and read SMS in other apps, including the standard Android system, but you’ll only be able to send from SMS. Standard SMS fees still apply " One way to find out, is to turn off data, and try and send a text via FB messenger as your default messenger and see if it works. also turn off wifi just to see.

It asks you to turn on data because of the Facebook component of it. SMS sent/received in the app won't use any data. You'll only use data if you send a Facebook message or whenever you receive a Facebook message.
