Charging cable for Galaxy S5 Neo

Userlevel 1
Does anyone know of a good charging cable to buy for the Galaxy S5 Neo?  I've bought a couple off eBay, but they charge so hideously slow my phone isn't even fully charged after a night's sleep.  The one I got with my phone charges really fast, but it's only 3 feet long.  I'm looking for a fast 6 foot charging cable.  Preferably from Amazon.ca or something so I can get free shipping.

Or is there some way to talk Koodo into sending me a new longer cable like the one that came with my phone?

Thanks.

I assume you mean the USB cable itself and not a charger as well? I've always been partial to monoprice cables, expecially for the colours. They have 6 foot ones and longer even. I have no issues with the ones I got. Anker has nice ones as well.

Yeah.  The outlet to USB doesn't seem to be the issue, as using it with the 3 foot cable is nice and fast.  It's just the speed of the aftermarket cables.

I'll take a look at those brands. Thanks.

Since you mentioned concerned over charge times the monoprice ones charge at ove 90% the rated charger capacity so they should work well.

Great!  Thanks for the heads up.

I can second the mono price cables. Well worth it. Also check out Amazon Basics. Good stuff

Wow that is a big differenc ein chargning time.  i always thought the determining factor for charging time was the adaptor and not the cable.  Have you thought of getting a USB extension cable instead?

Hadn't actually thought of that.  I've got a couple USB extension cables lying around and will give that a try tonight.

Thanks.

Tired the USB extension cable last night.  It charges at half the speed compared to just using the stock cable that came with the phone.

With the short stock cable, I can charge my battery 30% in an hour.  Using the extension and the stock cable, it's only 15%.

It depends on the kind of wire used in the manufacturing of aftermarket USB cables. Most aftermarket USB cables use the same wiring designed for a PC's USB port and are usually rated for 500 mA (or 0.5 amps). Thinner wire at longer lengths, (e.g. 2 metres) will develop resistance, thereby reducing charging speeds. Conversely, a thicker wire (e.g. 20 AWG) of the same length offers less resistance and should improve charging speeds. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/PortaPow-2m-200cm-High-Speed-Charge-Micro-USB-Charging-Cable-Fast-Charger/222152891110?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140620091118%26meid%3Da933664478ad44d3b77daae11bdfa23d%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D3%26sd%3D222057811577

A good place to get cheap charging cables that aren't garbage is Winners/Marshalls. If they don't work well, you can return them, though I've never had to. Amazon sells good quality cables online (AmazonBasics brand).

Checked Amazon.ca today, and it seems they mostly provide cables for Apple devices.  Didn't see a single cable under the Basics section that would fit this phone or any other Android phone for that matter.

I did see some 6' USB 3.0 extenders though, so I may try one of those.

Thanks for the suggestion.

You're welcome. I also have experience with AUKEY (but the USB-C cables). Here's a micro-USB they offer:

Here are some micro-usb cables that I have been using for quite some time, they work great and have a nice length to them as well:

How fast does it charge your particular phone?

The normal time? I've never really counted how long it took but it was fully charged every time I woke up after plugging it in.

Think you could plug it in when you've got 15 minutes to kill and see what percentage it charges it during that time?

It'll vary on every phone and also what type of wall adapter you use.

I understand that.  I myself am using the adapter and cable that were shipped by Koodo with my S5 Neo.  I'm just trying to get some ballpark figures so I can see what would be a fast charging, decent length cable for this phone.

Keep the USB charging cable short. The longer the wire, the more distance current has to travel, which in turn, increases battery charging times. This was proven when you connected the USB extension cable. The battery is not going to charge any faster because the charger is restricted by its amperage output. Also, the S5 Neo does not support Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 feature. Another option is to look for a wall charger that offers a higher amperage output rating than what your factory charger provides. Pair that with a six foot, high speed USB charging cable (no data transfer) and you may see better charging times. The reasoning behind the higher amperage charger and heavier gauge USB cable is that it should allow current to flow over greater lengths of cable, with less resistance. That said, I'm a firm believer in keeping everything OEM. The charger and USB cable is designed specifically for your phone. Should the battery overheat or fail prematurely, it could void your phones' warranty.

I like OEM too, but Samsung's been less than stellar on that front lately. Finding good quality 3rd party chargers that meet OE specs is fairly easy.

Just thought I'd make an update saying I found a long cable that charges just as fast as the stock 3 foot cable.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00OZJ6FIS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Reasonably priced and it charges my double capacity battery 100% in just over 3 hours.
