Can you buy phones from Koodo without signing up for a plan?

I keep seeing similar questions, but no real answer:

Can you buy a phone from Koodo (in my case on a prepaid plan) from the store/kiosk without signing up for a monthly plan or Tab?

I ask this now, because I've asked at more than one kiosk, and have been told, no that I need to sign up with a Tab or plan. So I wanted to know if the people running the kiosks are confused or if I need to buy a phone from elsewhere to later be unlocked by Koodo.

Some places you can, some you can't.
That's why the answers are so mixed.
At corporate stores I'm pretty sure you at least have to have a Koodo plan.

But some dealers will sell them to you for higher prices and let you go wherever you want with it.

Thank you. Finally an answer that makes sense! I guess I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for an actual store that will sell them as the people I've seen running the kiosks seem to not want to sell the phones (maybe they get commission for getting people to sign up with plans). I was curious mainly because I kept seeing posts on the Koodo website for prepaid phones and the prices were cheaper than the prices offered in electronic stores (like staples or walmart)

No problem.
Just call around.
Lots of places to find a phone nowadays 🙂

You can buy a prepaid phone for your prepaid plan. I do no think you need to buy a phone from elsewhere in order to use prepaid. The thing you can not buy is a postpaid phone without a postpaid plan (sign up for plan).

Also, if you buy an unlocked phone from elsewhere, it will not be locked by Koodo. It will stay unlocked. Koodo does not lock other phone then his's.

you can buy prepaid Koodo phone from any location without the need to attach them to a tab/plan. SOME location you can also purchase phones outright that are meant for the monthly service.

As far as the unlocking... you can unlock at a third party company that unlocks devices. If you wish for Koodo to unlock a device it must be on an active account with at least 90 days of service

Except if the phone is bought unsubsidized. Than Koodo can do it right away if requested.

I did not know that Jon. So if I pay for the full cost of my phone I can request Koodo to unlock it without being serviced for 90 days?

Hey Taiyewo! As pretty much everyone said here, you can indeed purchase a prepaid device at any location without having an account. More often than not, a postpaid phone will not be sold outright.
Hey Anna,

But how do you know which phones are for prepaid use? I've asked at 3 different kiosks and one said they do sell their phones and the other two said no, they don't sell the phones. The weird part was that all the prices were different at the kiosks.

I think many places are just trying to get people to sign up to postpaid. It's too annoying to figure out the actual price of the phone I want to upgrade to.

I think I'll buy my phone elsewhere and have it unlocked. Thanks for all the advice! It has all been very helpful.
