Hi Pat, Your phone by default would of been locked to Koodo/Telus/Public Mobile, so if your friend wants to use any of those three carriers than yes, he can just put in their own SIM cards and away they go! If the want to use another carrier, they will need to have it unlocked first.

How much does it cost to have our phone unlocked?

Koodo charges $50 to unlock phones. If it is an Android phone, many third party unlocking services may well be cheaper.  Look to eBay for those with a good reputation to find your best choice.

If you have sensitive info on your phone you better factory reset it.

Always best to do the reset in settings to clear your personal data, no matter who is getting the phone. Too many places where you will remain signed in automatically if you have asked for your passowrds to be saved.

If your phone was with Koodo (or a non Bell owned company) you will have to get it unlocked. Your best and cheapest bet would be to get an unlock code online (ebay for example). They will run you between $5 and $20.
