The set up is what is using the data. You have 10 days where all data used will not count towards your monthly allotment as long as your a new customer or adding a line to your account. This does not apply if you simply purchased a new phone and set it up on data. It would have prompted you saying this set up will cause charges or however it says it. It also gives the option of using wifi to do initial set up.

Did you install any apps or have a system update? What was your old phone? If you look in settings, and Mobile data, it will tell you what used the data.
Thanks, we have been with Koodoo for about 4 yrs, so does that count as a new customer ? we just bought the new phone on Friday, could it also be caused by the fact we didn't have our wifi enabled until the next day.

No your not a new customer unfortunately lol. A new customer is exactly what it states( new or adding a line ). Yes that is why you were charged as you weren't on wifi and you are not a new customer.

I wish things were more straight forward when setting up a phone like a pop up that says "this will cause significant data charges to your bill ".

Yea, we are not savy about all this, we only have had one cheap samsung phone so far and were not aware until it was too late that we should have had it on wifi. Guess we won't be using the phone for a few weeks until we get into May! Wish the sales lady would have given us a heads up about it?

You can simply turn data off in the settings menu that way you can still use the phone via wifi at home or the coffee shop until your data plan resets. Plus you can still use the calling and texting features. Also you can set up a data limit warning in the same area of settings so you at least get notified when you use what ever you choose to consider to be too much data. Yes it happened to myself as well and they didn't say anything. ( thankfully I was a new customer at the time ). It should be brought up every time they set up a new phone for a customer. We can pass this to the right people for ya so at the very least they will see it and hopefully pass that to the store level.
Thanks for all your info. We will turn off the data and that should keep us out of trouble until May.
