Anyone charged for roaming near boarder?


I was visiting Niagara Falls and was charged for roaming data. Funny thing is, while I had my GPS ON because I needed it to drive there, I didn't have the problem. The minute I turned off GPS, I got a big R on top of the reception bars. 

I understand that I was in close proximity, but really? Does Koodo really depend on the GPS information of my device that I can probably easily hack to get free coverage in the states?

I can probably prove to them that I never crossed the boarder, but did anyone else have similar experience? I am about to dispute very soon......

You are charged for connecting to American providers.
Even if you were on our side but connected to an american provider I'm pretty sure they can still charge you.
The best fix is to go into your settings and make sure roaming data is turned off.

But yeah definitely call in, I'm sure if you explain the situation they would be willing to accommodate you.

I'm sure they have a pattern of innocent tower pings versus someone saying they didn't cross, but actual did cross. Like Mitchell said, give Koodo Billing a call.

When I know I'll be in a border town, I call Koodo in advance and let them know and they confirm that they made note on my account. I've never been billed and have never had any reason to call Koodo Billing (knock on wood). So either my little system works, or my phone is a piece of crap...ha

On some phones, you can manually select [b]Koodo only as your network provider when you approach the border. You will not latch onto the US towers for calls or data, and may actually get "free" service in the US for a kilometer or so before losing signal entirely.
I never thought this would be a very active forum but what do you know! I did learn some great tips from those who replied, so thanks for that.

I do want to mention that I never in fact crossed the border... and I hope they don't charge me for this inquiry.

Your phone has a very limited attention span. Always listens to whoever is shouting loudest at the bar, without worrying about who's gonna pay the bill...

Just teach it to listen to the one who brought ya first.

Similar situation occurred to my family. We crossed into Canada at the Sault and one phone connected to the US and one connected to Canada. Called the Canadian provider of the incorrect connection and were refunded a portion of the roaming and LD charges. Always be wary in areas of close proximity and never fear a polite call to your provider billing to try and resolve these crazy situations.

Hey there! If accidental roaming occured, we definitely do credit that on the account. We are aware that some places close to the US border can result in accidental roaming charges and we do accomodate accordingly. Just call in at *611 and explain what happened to an agent and it should be cleared up 🙂
